01 / OUR STORY

It started with
one hive.

About five years ago, we brought our first hive to Riverside Farm. We’d heard bees were struggling and wanted to do something to help. We had little idea how much work it would take, and we’re still learning.

That first taste of our own honey took us by surprise. Today our sons Zak and Josh do most of the beekeeping, tending between six and twelve British National hives. Inside are Buckfast bees, known for their calm, gentle nature.

The work of a colony.

By our farm’s estimate, a bee gathers enough nectar in its lifetime to make about 0.8 g of honey. One jar represents the lifetime output of around 425 bees, with a colony of some 45,000 working together.
